Features
- Dimensions: 1" x 1" x 1" (25 mm x 25 mm x 25 mm)
- Parallel and Perpendicular to within 0.002" (0.05 mm)
- Low Profile Cap Screws, Setscrews, and Screw Thread Adapters Available
The RM1G, RM1S, and RM1F(/M) Construction Cubes aid in building rigid 3D structures from our optomechanical components. They are machined from a single block of aluminum, providing excellent rigidity, and their faces are parallel and perpendicular to within 0.002" (0.05 mm).
The RM1G and RM1S cubes each feature three 1/4" (M6) counterbores on adjacent faces, and the RM1S cube is slotted to accept hardboard walls for the construction of light-tight optical enclosures. Our low-profile channel screws are required in order to fasten optomechanics to the adjacent faces of these construction cubes. These low-profile screws feature a shortened cap height relative to standard cap screws.
The RM1F(/M) cube contains a centered 1/4"-20 (M6 x 1.0) tapped hole on all six sides. This cube is compatible with our Ø1" Pillar Posts with 1/4"-20 (M6 x 1.0) taps via 1/4"-20 (M6 x 1.0) setscrews. These setscrews also facilitate connections to the bottom end of Ø1/2" posts. By using a screw thread adapter, these cubes can be attached to Ø1" pillar posts with 8-32 (M4 x 0.7) threading or the top end of Ø1/2" posts.

(posted 2012-06-25 08:59:00.0) Response from Tim at Thorlabs: Thank you for pointing this out! We have an engineer going over the drawings and series. The RM1G can be used with our SH6M10LP M6 channel screws, but we currently do not have plans for a fully metric (25mm) cube. We would love to get your feedback on this design’s benefits so that we can add it to our customer inspired ideas and I will contact you to continue this conversation. iain
(posted 2012-06-20 08:24:26.0) There is a mistake on the drawing of part RM1G. The length of the side of the cube should be 25.4 mm (and not 25 mm).
Do you have any plans to introduce a fully metric 25-mm-square construction cube? Thorlabs
(posted 2010-10-25 21:56:07.0) Response from Thorlabs to last poster: We will look into modifying the /M cubes for fully metric dimensions. We have to evaluate the impact this design change would have on all the matching components. Please contact us at techsupport@thorlabs.com for follow up. user
(posted 2010-10-25 14:48:45.0) The metric version of the 1-inch construction cubes have, indeed, 1 inch long dimension. Only threads are changed.
Would it be more logical to have a construction cube with 25.0mm external dimension? |

RM1F Being Used to Mount Two Ø1" Pillar Posts at a Right Angle for an Optomechanical Assembly
- Holds up to Six Optomechanics at Right Angles
- One-Piece Aluminum Construction for Excellent Rigidity
- Parallel and Perpendicular to Within 0.002" (0.05 mm)
The RM1F(/M) Construction Cube contains a centered 1/4"-20 (M6 x 1.0) tapped hole on all six sides. Since it is machined from a single block of aluminum, it is ideal for constructions that need the highest available degree of sturdiness. It can be connected to up to six optomechanics by using setscrews.

Low-Profile Channel Screws in RM1G
- RM1G: Counterbored on Three Sides
- RM1S: Counterbored on Three Sides and Slotted to Accommodate Enclosure Walls
- One-Piece Aluminum Construction for Excellent Rigidity
- Parallel and Perpendicular to Within 0.002" (0.05 mm)
These Construction Cubes contain three 1/4" (M6) counterbores on adjacent faces. They can be connected to up to three optomechanical components by tightening our Low-Profile Channel Screws (sold below) through the counterbores, as shown in the images to the right. In addition, the RM1S cube has slotted corners to accept posterboard and hardboard walls for the construction of light-tight optical enclosures. Since both these cubes are machined from a single block of aluminum, they are ideal for constructions that need to be as sturdy as possible.
If compatibility with more than three optomechanical components is needed, or if components are to be placed on opposing faces, please consider the RM1F Construction Cube below.

Standard Cap Screw in RM1G Construction Cube
Our Low-Profile Channel Screws have a reduced cap head height relative to standard screws, permitting them to be used in tight spaces. In particular, they are recommended when neighboring screws are at a right angle and in close proximity, as in our XE25W3 Corner Cube or RM1G and RM1S Construction Cubes.
Shown to the right are a standard cap screw and a low-profile channel screw installed in an RM1G cube. The low-profile screw's shortened cap height prevents neighboring screws from interfering with each other.
The head of each screw also fits into XE rail channels for alternate construction methods, as outlined here.
